Dear Prime Minister,

I write to you as a very concerned resident of Wirral, Merseyside. My concerns are for our precious greenbelt.

On Wirral we have some of the most beautiful places in Merseyside, with exceptional views across the River Dee to Wales on the west side of the peninsula and to the east we have spectacular views towards Liverpool across the River Mersey. Wirral is a peninsula of just 60 square miles, with over 20 miles of coast. It is a very popular tourist attraction.

As part of that tourist attraction is our greenbelt, our open fields, used in the main for farming. We have some of the highest grades of soil in the west of England, comprising of grade 2 and grades 3a and 3b. Ideal for crop growing. However, all this is set to be destroyed by the largest landowner, Leverhulme Estates, who own 5,500 acres of land of good quality farm land.

Leverhulme Estates propose to build up to 21,000 houses on this land, houses that we do not need. They have continually ignored the local residents, indeed, they have refused to meet with residents face to face in public meetings, to hear our concerns, they have totally ignored the wishes of the vast majority of local people. They refused to meet with local Conservative Councillors, who are also very concerned about these proposals. They continue to give out mis-information in their Vision for a sustainable future, along with the many other documents that they have produced not at least the 160 documents accompanying their latest application to build on Greenhouse Farm in Greasby (a very ancient village dating back before Stonehenge). Building on this farm will destroy and obliterate most of Wirral’s history and heritage, this farm is critical as to where we come from. It has a Mesolithic site, Roman roads that are widely believed to have played a part in the battle of Brunanburgh between the Saxons and Vikings (over 30,00 soldiers killed), it is also rich in wildlife and biodiversity. Infrastructure in the area is very, very poor. Hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, dentists, all full to capacity.

Prime Minister, I implore you to stop this destruction of our farmlands. I was very encouraged by your statement to the Mail online, also in the House of Commons, in which you said.

“Greenbelt land is extremely precious in the UK. We have seen too many examples of local councils circumventing the views of residents, by taking land out of greenbelt for development, but I will put a stop to it. Under my plans, if a local authority has clearly judged development to be inappropriate, then there are no circumstances in which planning permission should be granted. More homes can be built while protecting greenbelt. My policy will be brownfield, brownfield, brownfield”. 

This is excellent, exactly what people on Wirral want to hear, however, there is a massive problem with inspectors should the application go to appeal. I believe the appeal system is NOT fit for purpose and should be abolished, for a much more resident views approach.
