Peak Cluster Carbon Capture Project – Implications for Wirral

The Peak Cluster project is a major carbon capture and storage (CCS) proposal intended to reduce emissions from cement and lime production in the Peak District and surrounding areas. Captured CO₂ would be transported via a new underground pipeline network and permanently stored beneath the seabed in the East Irish Sea.

For Wirral, the proposals are significant. Current consultation materials indicate that new CO₂ pipework would pass through parts of the Wirral, with associated infrastructure and development required in the Meols area to support onward transport to offshore storage. This brings potential impacts during construction and raises longer-term questions around land use, coastal environments, and community disruption.

While supporters see Peak Cluster as an important contribution to UK climate targets and industrial decarbonisation, others are concerned about the environmental footprint of extensive new pipeline infrastructure and whether carbon capture could slow the transition away from high-carbon industries altogether.
